Edmonton Review

Post by Tthip »

This is not mine.
I borrowed this from the Hip newsgroup:

"We gotta... I wanna get this right,
'cause you had to jump through fiery hoops to be with us tonight."

Just back in from the concert here in Edmonton. Club setting was
amazing, I'm bad at estimating sizes - 500, 600 people maybe? The band
sounded really tight, the fall tour is going to be awesome. Songs I
can remember, in no particular order:

Poets
Summer's Killing Us
One Night in Copenhagen
It Can't Be Nashville Every Night
Courage
NOIS
Fully Completely
Grace Too
Mean Streak
Are We Family
Goodnight Josephine
Wheat Kings
My Music At Work
It's A Good Life If You Don't Weaken
Dire Wolf
At the Hundredth Meridian
We'll Go Too

Highlights - Gord starting over in Summer's Killing Us after he forgot
some words, teasing us by shouting Courage before they played a new
song (followed by Courage), and ripping through the "If I die of
vanity..." part of Meridian. 3 encores and a promise to come back in
the fall. Can't wait. The concert seemed to fly by, it's only now that
I look at it that I realize it was a pretty wicked setlist. Anyhow,
great time. You guys/gals in Calgary and Vancouver are in for a treat.

m.r.t. (now really seriously fully completely can't wait for the 29th)

yes it was indeed a great show. by far the best hip show ive ever seen or ever will see. best version of 100th meridian ive ever heard. umm sorry for the lack of a setlist but in one of the other posts they list all the songs so thatll have to do until they post it on thehip.com. unforgetable night.

is any one willing to trade for the show or post it on the ftp? please.

had apost in the review section but i guess nobody can see it...anybody else have a strange feeling after seeing a show where it all seems like a dream? i am 11 hrs removed from the kick ass show last night and i think i have kinda been jaw dropped all morning! freakin amazing!got to meet both gords, paul and bobby after the show for the first time...johnny was MIA...gord missed quite a few lines last night and had 1 startover on summer...i remember a conversation he seemed to be having with his mic stand, the conversation ended with gord telling it that he supplied the content or something to that effect...was good to meet a few fellow hipbasers-bauer from regina, tlb and mark from vancouver...thanks for the smoke,it did its job! 3 encores as well...never would have dreamed that! we`ll go too was an excellent suprise.got 3 of the boys to sign an old phantom power promo poster...gord d scratched out the phantom power and wrote "kory power". talked with paul for about 5-10 minutes and it sounds like november for a return out west...can`t wait! i am sure more tidbits will come to me as the days pass but my head is still in a haze right now,a good kinda haze!

the bear had a hip parade for a pair of ducats...some cool "floats" but some disturbing ones as well...went to a little park about a block from the venue for a beer...and we are just standing there and all of a sudden this dude runs by with nothing but a bear sticker on his chest and one on his back...nothing else! how does this guy feel today with doing that and not even winning tickets? i wouldn`t be feeling too good myself!

AMAZING show. By far the coolest concert I've ever been to. I managed to get right up to the front (in front of Gord and Paul). The crowd was great, and yes, there are people out there who got setlists (I think they gave out 3). I have seen the band 4 times now, and even though they played mostly stuff off their new album, it was f*ckin awesome.
I took something like 72 photos at the show, so I should be posting a lot within the next week.

Edmonton Review and Setlist

Post by Polar_Bear_Gus »

I wrote this right after the concert but didn't have a chance to post it until now:

Gord sweats. A lot. I just got back from an amazing concert. I was
3 feet from the biggest band in Canada, in a tiny little club with a
few hundred of my closest friends, comrades held together by our
common love of all things Tragic and Hip. A few people, like me, were
lucky enough to be able to buy tickets thanks to the Hip fan club.
Everyone else there had to prove their fandom by winning radio
contests. The crowd was fantastic. Everyone knew Gord hates moshing
and crowd surfing. There wasn't any pushing or shoving or guys
falling down drunk. Everyone was there to enjoy their favourite
band. And enjoy it they (and I) did. From the first cords of "Heaven
Is A Better Place Today" the crowd was completely nuts. I've been to
big shows in giant stadiums and I can tell you this concert was
louder.

Everything was amazing tonight. I was one person away from the
stage. Close enough touch them. Close enough to see previously
mentioned sweat drip off every part of Gord's body. Three songs in
his white shirt was soaked, a few songs after that you could see
through it. Everyone was sweating, though, they were playing their
hearts out.

This was the first time they were playing the new songs from "In
Between Evolution" in public. They had played a couple of private
shows in Whistler earlier. They new songs sounded great. But they
might have a few kinks to work out before the tour, they had to
restart "Summer's Killing Us", which the crowd loved. As usual The
Hip can do no wrong. Every flubbed line or miscue is a reason to
cheer. The few old songs they played were spot on. Everyone there
was singing along with every word.

A few random things from the night. There was a girl who had written
"Marry Me Johnny" on her shoulder, she did get Johnny's attention and
he gave her a smile. The roadies were nice enough to hand out the set
lists to a few lucky people. Gord screwed up the song order and
started into a rant destined to lead in to Courage. Paul comes over
to him and whispers in his ear telling him that they're playing a
different song first. Yet another reason to cheer. A beach ball was
being thrown around and ended up knocking over Gord's mic before the
second encore started. Gord of course managed to turn this into a
crazy rant.

Highlights of the evening for me were "It's A Good Life If You Don't
Weaken", "Courage", "Grace Too", "New Orleans", and the third encore,
"Wheat Kings".

Gord said "See you in the fall" at the end, I can't wait.

Set List:

Heaven Is A Better Place Today
Summer's Killing Us
Poets
Goodnight Josephine
We'll Go Too
You're Everywhere
It's A Good Life If You Don't Weaken
Vaccination Scar
Courage
It Can't Be Nashville Every Night
The Dire Wolf
One Night In Copenhagen
At The Hundredth Meridian
Are We Family
Gus: The Polar Bear From Central Park
My Music At Work
The Heart Of The Melt

Encore 1

Grace Too
If New Orleans Is Beat
New Orleans Is Sinking

Encore 2

Mean Streak
Fully Completely

Encore 3

Wheat Kings

I think I was right behind you and your girlfriend. I would have been the guy with the mic.

If anyone is interested here's a link to some of the photos that I took at the show:

I didn't feel like putting up any of the average shots, but these are by far some of the better ones.
Comments are appreciated.

Those are some really great shots, CP quality to be sure. Well done. Nice composition, good exposures.

SLR, 35 or 35-80 lens, 800 film I'm guessing.... Did you manually take them or leave it to the auto. What kind of camera? Did you use bounce flash or stage lights?

The Paul silouhette goes on the cover of my newspaper any day.

I used an olympus point and shoot camera with a 35 mm lens (no zoom). Unfortunately they didn't allow SLR cameras in this time around, otherwise I would've brought one. Due to the fact that it was a point and shoot, I had to just leave it on auto.
The lighting was just the stage lighting without a flash. Personally, I like the look of them a lot more with just the stage lights.
Thank you for all the kind words :)
