Hipbase Bootleg Show of the Month: May 2018

Post by sean.bonner »

Time to leave behind M@W and get All Tore Up with our featured In Violet Light show from 2002!

This month's selection is brought to you by gsmacleod!

2002-07-28 - Boston, Massachusetts - Somerville Theater

Image
Been through a bunch - several favourites but going to go with July 28, 2002 from Boston.

I missed this tour due to work and really dove into shows trying to pick this tour's bootleg. Lots of good boots available and some great shows with less than stellar recordings. Went with Boston for both the quality of the recording and also the setlist; both great. I was hoping for a show with both Dire Wolf and Dark Canuck but while I had several short listed that fit the bill, this one kept pulling me back. Hopefully others enjoy it as much as I have.

Excellent show! I was at both the 07/27 and 07/28 shows. I have such awesome memories of that entire weekend.

Speaking of which, there's an A+ soundboard recording of the 07/26 Somerville show in the archive in case you guys want more:

Use It Up got fuckin grilled on 'The Weakest Link'. I think it's my favourite song on the record. I would have loved to have seen it, and it's so great as an opener.

Just starting to dabble into the show, and I think it's the first time I've heard Gordie sing the final verse of Don't Wake Daddy that high before. It's fantastic. Amazing version!

Awesome quality for the 26th show. Do you have any others posted that are just as good for quality? I am also looking for Syracuse and Rochester shows from the Henhouse tour. They were both very early on the tour I think May or June for both shows. Syracuse might have been the first or second show of the tour and they went south after that show. About a month later they were back up north playing the Rochester show.

Blow At High Dough -> All Tore Up -> 700 Ft. Ceiling -> Pigeon Camera (good thing it's only music) -> Daredevil -> Silver Jet

Fucking incredible. What a run.

That's a soundboard. Other Hip soundboards exist.

Here are two of my favourites:

1998-12-12 - Milwaukee, Wisconsin

This was already part of the bootleg club!

2004-12-03 - Saint John, New Brunswick

Don't think I can help you with those Henhouse shows from Rochester and Syracuse though. They are not in the Hipbase bootleg archive.

Just curious... does anyone who downloads these try to listen to the recording without knowing the setlist?

I go back and fourth. Sometimes I will ignore the set list and others I will look at it ahead of time.

Since I missed this tour, when I went through the shows, I read a bunch of the text files in an attempt to weed out any low quality recordings and also to give the setlist a quick glance. However, I then downloaded a bunch (10 or 11) and just listened to show after show without following a setlist. One of the things that I loved about this show was the setlist but when I first listened, it was a surprise as what was coming next.

Love Use It Up as the opener; have always liked the tune and slots well in the opening spot I think as things pick up and build.

My Music at Work is a solid followup and things really get moving from there. Then, as you mention, Blow to Silver Jet is fantastic in terms of the quality of the performance and the song selection. Love the forgotten lyrics in Pigeon Camera; reminds me of Rob's quote about Gord always forgetting the lyrics.

Just listened to the portion I'd had kept in my pocket, in my eyes, in my blood

The Dire Wolf
Locked In The Trunk Of A Car
--
Thugs
Save The Planet
New Orleans Is Sinking

All the In Violet Light songs featured integrate so well to form such an amazing set.

When I went to the 2009 Montreal Metrpolis run, I was so fucking fortunate to see perforamces of The Dark Canuck and Throwing for my first an only time.

Also, Use It Up opens so many of my fantasy setlists. I am so jealous if you were at a Hip show, and before they came on stage, that automated drum beat drops... (Holy f**k it's Jesus)

Has Johnny ever talked about why he started or stopped wearing headphones/ear protection? I would also love to hear the boys talk about why and when they changed stage configurations, like where they stood. I've seen a few different formations in the early days (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g60nQgeU_nY).

I was driving around this past weekend and a couple of live hip songs came on the radio - I've continued to listen to plenty of bootlegs but this unexpected occurence really caught me off gaurd and got me thinking about how much I miss seeing these guys - I'm obviously preaching to the choir here but what a fucking band!

With this show being part of the IVL tour, it reaffirms my love of this album (even if there are only a few songs in the setlist) it also reminds me of the question of what would a more raw/less polished version of this album sound like?

I chuckled looking at the file names for this boot as you can see it was created to make burning to a CD easy with disc 1 and disc 2, it has been ages since I've listened to a bootleg on a CD.

01 Use It Up - I'm a huge fan of this as an opener - sure they have better options, but this one works well as a tone setter in my books
02 Music@Work - Believe I heard them perform this song (or Poets) more than any other, and I love it so much, always sounds like they are having fun playing it
03 Blow At High Dough - This has to be the earliest I've ever seen this song show up on a setlist - I will never not enjoy hearing Gord muck up the lyrics
04 All Tore Up - Didn't expect this to show up on the setlist - "you want an open concept? I'll give you open concepts" had the pleasure of catching this one live once
05 700ft Ceiling - slot's nicely in here, this is already such a cool setlist (I'm doing my best not to peek ahead at the song list)

06 Pigeon Camera - what an interesting 3 song run, maybe it's just me but this feels like a slightly uptempo version of the song even with Gord forgetting the words
07 DareDevil - I will take this song as part of any show
08 Silver Jet - I was surprised to see the lack of love for this song during the IVL album voting, I think I've listened to more 2002 boots than any other tour and this was a constant on most sets, I think it's a great live song.
09 Courage - this recording does a great job picking up the crowd during this one, great sing along
10 Don't Wake Daddy - nice little intro to this one - Do you think Gord wrote this from the perspective of the father or the child? or both?

11 Good Life - another song I've always preffered live versions of - has a bit of a chilling aspect to it
12 Poets - was very happy to see this win the bronze medal round of the weakest link!
13 Greasy Jungle - another pleasant surprise
14 Wheat Kings - I admit this is a marvelous song, and I don't know if I overplayed it in my younger days, but this would be the song I'd be most likely to skip in this set.
15 Gift Shop - I will forever associate this song with it's Woodstock performance for some reason, and I'm very ok with that.

16 Dire Wolf - IVL's greatest tune and this version of it is equally as great! Love when the first chorus hits.
17 Locked In The Trunk - nice brooding version of the song, love the classic "Wooooo" part way through.
18 Thugs - I've probably mentioned in plenty of other posts that this song was my white whale for the longest time, my heart speeds up anytime I see this show up on a bootleg and at the start of an encore none the less.
19 Save The Planet - Ha, yes, out of nowhere - great song!
20 New Orleans Is Sinking - Closing with the heavy hitter

In conclusion, this is a fun show with what feels like a very unique setlist, while the rants are few, the energy is great. I'm assuming this show was part of a couple nights in Boston which might explain why some of the setlist staples are missing and the general lack of IVL songs. Thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed this!

The final performance of Silver Jet being at That Night In Toronto is travesty. Sounds fantastic here.
