Hipbase Bootleg Show of the Month: October 2017

Post by sean.bonner »

Now we move onto the Up To Here era for October 2017. The selection has been made by gsmacleod.

The show that we are listening to for October is....

1990-04-12 - Montreal, Quebec

Here is what gmacleod said about his selection:
Went with this because it's a good recording and a very interesting setlist. I was debating between a few shows (including the great Rotterdam show I had never heard before and of course the Misty Moon but I stayed away from that as most people have heard it). A few things sold this one for me; Get Back Again, a few great performances of RA tracks soon to be released, extended All Canadian Surf Club (forgot how much fun this was with some of the extended jams), NOIS be stretched out and starting to take shape as a canvas for new material and a fun cover in I'll Make Love to You.

Incredibly hard choice and it was a ton of fun to go back and listen to some shows I haven't listened to in 15-20 years.

"This is a song about a guy who sits at home on his couch watching hockey games... like me."

Certainly lots of Road Apples for Up To Here just being released!

Finally got a chance to check out this show (after missing out on the September bootleg).

My first thought is it's impressive that a band touring their first full release was able to book an hour and a half set (maybe this was more common in the early 90's, but somewhat rarer today). By a rough estimate UTH had been released about five months prior. As Sean stated, cool to see they are already playing a number of songs that would appear on Road Apples and be released about a year later.

Looking up the venue, it held 1200 people, unsure of the number that came to this show, but it sounds well attended. Very cool to hear fans singing along with NOIS and a few other tracks.

I haven't listened to a ton of bootlegs from this era, but this sounds like a band really finding their road legs and Gord continuing to build his on stage persona.

Some highlights:

Opiated sounded really strong, I was very happy to hear it live for the first time on their last tour - and open the show none the less.
Everytime you go sounded like a real rocker
Love the intro to Boots or Hearts and certainly a trend Gord continued throughout touring of giving funny backstories to songs
NOIS sounded in fine form

The solo in Fight was 'epic' from the nexus.

Also I think that's the best All Canadian Surf Club I've ever heard. What a great little rant session! Downie even rants some very very early lyrics to Eldorado at the end of it.

In the running for highlight of this show if you ask me!

Also, hearing them 'test' On The Verge....

holy shit they nail it from so early on.

Sounds like the Skydiggers opened this one.

First time I've listened to I'll Make Love To You Anytime since...maybe the last time I heard this boot? They get lost in it... jammin' it hardddd

Then they finish with the most common Hip closer of all time.... AAAAAAAAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

October has been busy and I haven't gotten a chance to listen to this but with today's news, I needed to put some Hip on and this on my computer.

Crack My Spine Like a Whip - good energy, good start to the show. Forgot how much I enjoy this tune and how great it was when it would show up in the setlists of various boots I had collected over the years. Boys seem tight from the get go and the sound seems pretty much right on.

She Didn't Know - like the fast little riff at the beginning and it seems like they just keep rolling; some great guitar tones (as usual) from Rob with solid rhythm from Paul.

Highway Girl - another well worn tune that they hit well; fun to see the early song intro and mid song rambling that we know would grow into an iconic part of their shows. It seems as though they weren't quite sure when Gord was going to get back on track as it takes a second from when he falls into Highway Girl again until the boys really seem to get back into the groove of the song

It's Just As Well - have always enjoyed this tune; as mentioned early, a good toe tapper and while I understand why it didn't make an album, a solid song

Opiated - 2016 rekindled my love of this song; really like the chord progression and feel of the song. Great lyrics and one that I'm glad to have finally caught live. I really love listening to Rob's solo on this; such a great fit to the song

Everytime you Go - a really good version of this; lots of energy and the song is about as a good a version of this as I've heard

Boots - Gord's doing a good job but it seems like the guitars have gotten a bit lost in the mix; they're certainly there but it seems like they either could have been turned up a little (or perhaps it was just due to the recording device or position). Some of Rob's licks here a pretty interesting and fun; feels like Paul is holding back a little in the main riff; not quite as interesting as it usually is (and is on the album)

Trickle Down - they hit this one hard; it really takes off from the end of Boots with lots of energy and a big change it tempo.

Get Back Again - my favourite unreleased Hip song. When I was trading boots, anyone that had this on the setlist, regardless of quality, is one I would look to trade for. A beautiful song that I wish had made it onto an album at some point.

Three Pistols - fantastic; they are firing on all cylinders for this one, especially given that it is still a pretty new tune compared to the others they've played to this point in the show.

Fight - again seems like the band gets a bit lost in the mix here; sounds really good but a bit muffled.

All Canadian Surf Club - part of the reason I chose this boot; a long fun ACSC jam. I had totally forgotten what they used to do with this song and really enjoyed going through the boots and hearing them just riffing away while Gord rambled.

Going to have to come back to this; have to get some work done!

Hey guys, a big thanks to all who make the archive possible! Really enjoy the shows from this era and diggin this one right now. My first Hip show was just days before this, but I never see any record of it in any setlist archives. After the MIsty Moon show in Halifax on the 6th, and before Montreal on the 11th, The Hip played at "The Shipyard" in Moncton. "Crack My Spine Like A Whip" opened the show, "Get Back Again" was played and the encore was "Train Kept A Rollin". The show in Moncton had to be on the 9th or 10th as I know it was a week night.
