Hipbase Bootleg Show of the Month - December 2017

Post by sean.bonner »

December 1st. You know what that means. We are going to need some major reprieve from all the horrendous holiday music about to be jammed down our throats.

Good thing there's a solution for that.

We are currently going through a show for every tour era per month. December brings us to Fully Completely (1992-1993)

Our selection this month is brought to you by Hipbaser edgoffin
Here's my Fully Completely tour choice -- Ottawa, July 26, 1993:
http://hipfans.com/SeansVault/1993-07-2 ... ntario.zip

I chose this one because I was there, and I also don't have a great selection of good FC tour shows. This was from the ARA stop at then Frank Clair Stadium, now TD Place in Ottawa.

My memory of the show. Crash Vegas, Hothouse Flowers, Daniel Lanois, and Midnight Oil. The crowd was insane. We were down on the field for most of the day, and the crowd really hit a frenzy during the Hip and we bailed about halfway through for some seats in the stands. This was by far the largest crowd I'd seen for The Hip, just a year earlier they'd played the few 1000 capacity Congress Center and now headlining a stadium.

This recording quality is quite good, except at some stage it's been transferred and there's a bit of tape warble. I've never figured out the source. Possibly a radio broadcast, as I think it's maybe missing a few tracks (16 songs is a slightly shorter set that other ARA shows). I have a pretty good memory, but not down to a 1993 set list. It was one of the first Hip boots I bought, from a now closed antiques place in Kingston.

Some highlights:
* 100th Meridian, "I need more practice, I rub when I should pull"
* Unplucked, "your fingers start to wiggle"
* Courage, "here's a song about my favorite nuclear submarine", "vengeance is a waste of time"
* On the recording the end of Wheat Kings, but really intro to NOIS and "laminar flow"
* NOIS -- a pretty much complete version of Nautical in the middle (rhythm guitar parts are slightly different). I saw a few shows in this era, and was really hoping it would appear on an album. Closes with some water on fire, and a few lines frogman and clean and scrub, with a great closing line
* Really cool jam opens FC, and "four things you can see from the moon"
* "This is a song by Fredrick Nietzsche"

There's a FLAC version in the Hipbase archive as well:

The Tragically Hip
Landsdowne Park
Ottawa, ON
July 26th,1993

Unknown source, except it sounds like it has been transfered from a cassette at some point in time.

This has a great version of NOIS with Nautical Disaster in the middle.

1)Locked in the Trunk of a Car
2)Three Pistols
3)At the Hundredth Meridian
4)Last of the Unplucked Gems
5)Lionized
6)Courage
7)Eldorado
8 )Wheat Kings
9)New Orleans is Sinking
10)Fully Completely
11)The Wherewithal
12)Pigeon Camera
13)We'll Go Too
14)Fifty Mission Cap
15)Little Bones
Yeah, this sounds way better than Mariah Carey to me.

Started listening today. The sound quality on this is amazing. Has to be FM.... or crudely through the soundboard to a cassette. A+ quality.

Love the early set The Last of the Unplucked Gems.

Holy shit 93,94,95 versions of Gems are dynamite. Exact same here.

Yer fingers start to wiggle...

"This is our new stage play; I will be playing the role of the MacMillan-Bloedel executive..." Remember this intro so well as this tape saw regular play in my walkway as I was trekking back and forth to university. Great version of Locked and a great show opener; lots of energy and the boys are just flying.

"Spare the belt, spoil the stand" - the beginning of microphone stand banter? I don't recall any before this but certainly have not heard everything. Also enjoyed the bit about Thompson inserted into Three Pistols as well.

"You want the hunt but not the capture" - it has been at least fifteen years since I've listened to this boot and yet the intro/outro/midsong rants are so familiar and it's almost like catching up with an old friend. The 100th rant I could pretty recite line for line as I was listening despite how long since I've heard it.

Gems - the intro just gives me chills and I loved Gord's play with fingers wiggling through several boots I listened to from these shows. The build to Gems is, as always, perfect. Always so impressed at how tight the guys are, letting Gord do his thing until he's ready to come back to the song and then seamlessly they jump into the song and away we go.

Hopefully more later; what a great choice!

"Spell your name in the snow!" great version of Courage and the ranting at the end is just fantastic.

The intro to Eldorado is one of my favourites; from the "vengence is wasted on those who given time will destroy themselves" to the singing of "holy fucking shit" this one sticks with me as much as the intro to Grace on LBU.

Great version of Wheat Kings especially when things pick up later in the song.

Probably my favourite NOIS intro; "it's what hydrodynamicists call laminar flow" along with Nautical in NOIS. A perfect storm of awesomeness - perhaps my favourite live version of NOIS.

Paul's guitar tone on Fully is just beautiful; a little bit of dirt but just clear and resonating. Lays a perfect foundation for the song with some interesting drums fills, solid bass (as always) and wonderful licks from Rob.

"...and you can see Another Roadside Attraction! The Wherewithal!" Enjoy the energy of this song; high tempo and lots of fun.

Good version of Pigeon; Paul's guitar sounds a bit muddy to me to start but seems to be clearer as the song progresses. Really enjoy Rob's fills throughout as well as the solo.

Parts of this show feel familiar to me, though I have no recollection of having listened to it before.

Echoing what others has said, this is a solid performance with some great intros and rants by Gord. Thanks for sharing!!

Not sure if I listened to this bootleg before, or if I just recognize lots of the songs from Heksenketel. Regardless, this is a phenomenal performance. Contains some absolute classic Gordie-isms, with my favourite being Eldorado's 'Holy Fucking Shit!'.

A great selection to close out 2017.
