Bootleg Club - First Edition, Volume 07

Post by sean.bonner »

Welcome to the 7th volume of our very first edition of the Hipbase Bootleg Club!

Every two weeks a member of the Hipbase will post an audio recording to be featured in the Hipbase community. We will then all be required to rock the hell out of the selected audio day-in and day-out for a two week period (or ... also once).

Volume 06 runs from January 27th - February 9th. The Volume 07 selection has been made by Hipbaser tthip ! (That has got to be the most boring handle name on the site... next to just having your name probably)

And the show selected is....

drumroll......

I guess that wasn't a drum roll at all....

The one in the archive is missing at least one song.

Quick listen through, amazing performance even through the madness...

Loved the little ditty about Doug and Barb.

Good on Gordie for shuttin' it down when he did.

Hey dana, where are those bonus tracks from?

That was a killer sounding fire in the hole they were into when the band walked off stage. Loved the burnt church intro (I think that's what it's called). I can't imagine the hip have walked off stage mid song more than a couple of times in their career.

I enjoyed going blind into this show in terms of setlist. I will give it another play for sure.

See. Those are on there to actually see who makes it all the way through the entire show.
And I do not remember right now where they are from.

This is the first Hip show that I was front row. I was in front of Rob.
It was just a flimsy orange snow fence with the crowd on one side and bouncers on the other.
The crowd in back probably didn't know what was going on for real up front and with a weekend camping party with a live Hip show as the soundtrack they probably wouldn't have been able to comprehend.
The crowd kept pushing up throughout the show and near the end the bouncers were taking runs at the snow fence almost like football blocking sleds trying to bash the crowd back. The guy next to me for the entire show got pissed and blamed me for breaking his finger. He had his fingers through the snow fence or something and between the crowd pushing and the bouncers, um, bouncing- he said he broke his finger and was blaming me for some reason.
As Fire started the pushing must have revved up after the serenade of Bobcaygeon and all of the sudden the fence right in front of Gord went over with about a dozen or two people falling over each other.
What an amazing weekend/tour/experience Phantom Power was.
I also have video of this show, but it is pretty bad and shot from the back so you really do not get the fence experience from the video.
PS. The snow fence didn't get me, but I almost coulda died (or at least woulda got hurt really, really bad) at a Hip show on the Phantom Power tour, but not this show, so that is a story for another time.

Great pick and stories Dana. Would have loved to be there for that era, very thankful the tapers were.

Was this the first time the promoters put on a festival or did they misjudge the band and it's fans? A flimsy snow fence for a barricade seems pretty amateur. Great show by the boys and sounds like a great mix from the tapers location.

I was at this show! Near the front it was definitely crazy. IIRC, we had to park out in a cornfield. One of my favorite festivals with the gang from way back....
