Bootleg Club - First Edition, Volume 05

Post by sean.bonner »

Welcome to the 5th volume of our very first edition of the Hipbase Bootleg Club!

Every two weeks a member of the Hipbase will post an audio recording to be featured in the Hipbase community. We will then all be required to rock the hell out of the selected audio day-in and day-out for a two week period (or ... also once).

Volume 05 runs from December 16th - December 29th. The Volume 04 selection has been made by Hipbaser chancellor!

And the show selected is....

drumroll......

2006-06-24 - Toronto, Ontario
Fort York

This show is freely available on the Hipbase Live Show Archive
http://hipbase.com/show-archive/
Under MASTER-MP3 or MASTER-FLAC, select the 2006 folder.

Here is what Hipbaser chancellor had to say about this selection:
I am going to go with 06-24-2006 at Historic Fork York.

I went with to the show with Beanmedic. We met up with a bunch of Hipbasers before the show. The ones I remember are Lizard King, Trevor, Chris Chris, Thehip11, I believe FarmerDan was there as well. One key moment during the show I haven't forgot was when the beginning of 38 Years old started and Beanmedic completely lost his shit. What a great show.

Details: The Hip at Historic Fort York in Toronto, June 24th 2006. This show was fantastic, a
bunch of gems thrown in the setlist including the return of 38 Years Old, almost 12
years to the day since it's last preformance. The best intro to Courage I've ever heard
as well.

Disc 1:

01 - Don't Wake Daddy
02 - Courage
03 - Ocean
04 - Summer Is Killing Us
05 - Good Life
06 - Chagrin Falls
07 - Nautical Disaster
08 - Nashville
09 - 38 Years Old
10 - Puttin Down
11 - 100th Meridian
12 - Sherpa

Disc 2:

01 - Springtime In Vienna
02 - No Threat
03 - Blow At High Dough
04 - Something On
05 - The Wherewithal
06 - Crowd
Encore
07 - Drop Off
08 - Greasy Jungle
09 - We'll Go Too

Enjoy!

*******DO NOT SELL!!! Convert these files to MP3 if you must for your own listening
needs but please don't distribute them in a lossy format without asking.********

That is a disgustingly filthy setlist. 2006 Summer Fling was... ....so epic.

What a great show to close out the club for 2016. We will see yas in 2017. In the meantime, Happy Holigays.

If you did not sign up to be part of the selection committee, you can still participate! please feel free to listen to the show, and join the discussion in this thread.

Hope everyone enjoys! Volume 6 is coming soon... !

Oh man,

I was at this show as well, standing a few rows back on Paul's side of the stage. I wasn't able to make it to the show the previous night, but did see the setlist and while it was strong, this one blew it away. This show felt as close to an homage to dedicated fans as any I have been to. A few of my memories from this show (before listening to this boot for the 100th time):

Don't wake daddy - was a common opener during the summer, and I thought it worked well as a opener - a sort of mood setting "you woke dad' now there will be hell to pay.
Courage - I love the intro from Gord and his dedicating the song to the nurses at sick kids just as the song drops.
Chagrin Falls - the first rarity of the set, a nice surprise of things to come
38 Years Old - I'm not sure I to this day I am able to articulate what it was like hearing this. It felt like (even though the bootleg proves otherwise) there was a couple minute gap after Nashville while nothing was really happening, yet you could sense something was happening. As the first note of the song was played, it took my brain longer than normal to recognize the song, and then to believe what my ears were hearing
Puttin Down - This is far from my favourite Hip song, however, if they played it at every show I don't think I would complain - lots of fun live
Sherpa - Another song I only got to hear live once, and it was incredible, this song might actually have been my personal highlight for the show.
The Wherewithal - Love this song as a set closer

Drop-Off - Greasy - We'll Go Too - I can't imagine these three songs showing up as an encore very often.

Great Selection for the Bootleg Club

Fantastic selection. If there is a better example of the hip playing what they want, I cant think of it.

Surely some "hit hungry" hip fans left this show feeling starved for more, and thats ok

Loved the heartfelt message to nurses and music critic punchline before Courage.

"Well I know one thing you're NOT, you're not the ocean"

"Ah summer you talk a lot lets have a look atcha. This ones for you Mike" .... presuming this was an inside joke between Gord and his brother? Perhaps something a grandmother or aunt would say to them growing up. Wondering if Mike in the crowd is why 38 was played as well.

The good life intros carry extra weight for me now ...this one was no exception "Though Im not speaking from experience"

Chagrin falls - "Ok, I guess this would be a place where the aforementioned weakened might go" Perfect.

"This is for our boys and girls in Afghanistan, for Prime minister bush"

"This next story is true, and it isn't. True" Haunting.

Gord's crowd crontrol rants are as classic as the mic stand bits .. My fav from this show was the "No Gord we're not" female voice before he said "Dont squish the girls." before Wherewithal

"If you love somebody, do their dishes. If they dry, they're yours. If they don't they never were"

Great band, great show.

I watched this show a few months ago on YouTube. In 2006 I was in full-on Pearl Jam mode and saw 9 shows that year. That, mixed with The Hip skipping Winnipeg on both the Summer Fling and fall club tour in 2006, caused me to not pay super close attention to how good The Hip shows were that year. By the 2007 arena tour Gord was pretty "screamy." These 2006 shows were pretty special, setlists and execution was top notch.

"Ah summer you talk a lot lets have a look atcha. This ones for you Mike"
The first line of the quote is a play on a Mick Jagger line from the Rolling Stones live album 'Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out' (a must have live Stones document) and perhaps the Gimme Shelter documentary.
The original line is "Ah New York you talk a lot lets have a look atcha."
I'm a huge Stones fan and love the odd comments and song teases that refer to the Stones, that go by in the various shows. I would have loved to have cought a Stones cover during the '07 tour, but alas.
I really like Gord's banter on this show and the FAN's set list.

So does this mean everyone gets pushed by two weeks?
Can you edit the original post to show the new dates?
PS. Just this morning I got my show almost completely ready to share. Yum.

Great show!! The band at their best!! Gordie's intros amazing. Love the Courage intro and version. A Good Life, Chagrin Falls then Nautical were incredible. Amazing 100th Meridian!! Love the mic stand parts. So many great versions in this show. Gord really connecting with the crowd that day. The Wherewithal just cooks. The Drop off, Greasy and We'll Go Too Encore wow!! last words "the Gardiner Expressway, you just keep on doing what you are doing" lol.

The 2 shows at fort york were some of the finest performance I had the pleasure of attending. My friends and I still talk about this night. Its up there with the 6 nights of massey hall and the small warm up show in brockville before the 1st krock show.
