Bootleg Club - First Edition, Volume 03

Post by sean.bonner »

Welcome to the third volume of our very first edition of the Hipbase Bootleg Club!

Every two weeks a member of the Hipbase will post an audio recording to be featured in the Hipbase community. We will then all be required to rock the hell out of the selected audio day-in and day-out for a two week period (or ... also once).

Volume 03 runs from November 18th - December 1st. The Volume 03 selection has been made by Hipbase Admin mrlayance!

Another classic with crystal clear sound quality!

And the show they selected is....

My favourite part about this show:

IMO, this is the best PP era recording around, due to the sound quality and amazing performance.

Lots of great moments, fantastic setlist. This also has my favourite version of On The Verge (it will get you in the Holiday spirit!)

Great sounding show and great sounding Gord for the final show of the tour (which was far from sold out)
And getting Fireworks out of the way as the first song so I could sit back and enjoy the rest of the show is just a bonus for me.

That may be one of the best versions of Twist My Arm I have ever heard.

I did not download the show via the bootleg database, I am listening to the CD I have had for years.
I am only about 5 songs in but noticed they play Escape and ABAC faster than they currently do.
I wonder if this recording is slightly "sped up" or if this is my version vs the download or if this is just how they played it for this show. I don't seem to remember it faster from other 1998 shows.

I do not look at the setlist beforehand, why ruin it?
Still enjoy Emperor Penguin and love hearing Every Irrelevance in 100th

02 - I've got my harpoons in position... I've got the shakes!

04 - Back in '98, Escape Is At Hand was played just a little bit quicker, and maybe a little bit heavier.

05 - I started having millenial thoughts when I was about ten. I thought I was pretty ahead of my time.

07 - Translated from German. It's a house rocker. It's designed to make you wiggle out of your pants...

Everything goes Day For Night.

Any show that has emperor penguin on the set is fine by me.

I still get mad at the 14 year old version of myself who was absolutely in love with Phantom Power but was never able to make it to a show on that tour. The 14 year old version of myself would be shocked learning that after seeing more that 25 shows I never got to hear this one live.

I know I'm not alone in this one, and I think we all almost universally agree that it is such a great song.

Thanks again for selecting this show.

I have listened to this show so many times over the years, and I can't help to think it's one of the shows that would have really unveiled my eyes to how awesome and how much fun it is to listen to live shows. I have said several times here about EP being my favourite Hip song, and if you were to ask me out of the blue to recommend a live version, this would be the first - nay the quintessential live version of Emperor Penguin.

Also, Band on the Run is an album that is near and dear to my heart. That album is also a masterpiece (Nineteen Hundred Eighty-Five will be played at my wedding). I sometimes even find myself singing Jet to myself when the outro plays when I listen to Emperor Penguin. Crazy.

Listening to this show for the first time since May 24th and I've had one of 'those moments' that I'm sure we may have all had listening to TTH recently. A smile ear to ear with a tear in the eye.

In high school I always had my discman, and several of the portable 'wallets' of cds. I also had well over 200 hip concerts -- that I had either downloaded, or B&P'd -- burned on CD (with jewel cases and 'art'/setlists).'

The album cover was from that old Hipfans Art site that was full of gawdawful, cheesy, super hilarious, amazing covert art for the shows. Really compelling stuff though in 1999 when people were learning they could make their own CD Art in MS Paint with cool clipart.

I wish I could see that art archive again. I remember what the cover for this looked like. (Black background, yellow and white as font, cheesy ms paint effect with a live picture mirrored ).

Ahh the memories.

I was only ten years old in 1998. If I had a time machine, the first place I would go is January 29th, 1999 so I could see The Hip on the Phantom Power tour in my hometown.

Perfect choice Lance.

Hands down one of the best Hip bootlegs of all time. The '98/99 tour was definitely one for the ages. I was lucky enough to see them 4 times on that tour: San Francisco, Spokane, and back-to-back nights in Calgary. It was glorious.

I saw them at one of the Halifax shows in February '99, an it was an amazing show. I downloaded both of the Halifax shows from the PP tour but unfortunately the sound quality was terrible, so this was the next best way to reminisce.

what a great pick!! Gordie was really "on" for this show!!
Amazing Twist My Arm - one of my favorites
great rants through the whole show as Sean mentioned - mostly before and after the songs
really love the Poets and Nautical is epic with sweep me out into the lake and you will struggle then you will cease to struggle.
love the Luxury any time I can get it, Something on is much more intense than usual.
Gift Shop with another great rant then my favorite track from the show Emperor Penguin.
Let's face it any show with Emperor, Chagrin Falls, On The Verge and Vapour Trails has to be high in the goosebumps factor!!
Little Bones just crushed it for the encore!!
nice one Lance!!
