Hipbase Bootleg Show of the Month: September 2017

Post by sean.bonner »

When the summer is done and nobody sympathizes....

Hello Hipbase! We are back for September. We are starting a new edition of the club this September! For this edition, we are going backwards down the number line, and selecting a live show from each Hip record's ensuing tour.

This means, we are starting off by featuring a show from the Baby Blue album era, 1985-1988.

Hipbaser Britstones made this month's selection....

After searching through the Live Hip Archive I've settled on the Horseshoe Tavern show from July 15, '88.
I haven't taken the opportunity to go really listen to pre-Up To Here recordings until now.
This show has a great mix of EP tunes, pre-release Up To Here tunes, covers and unreleased songs.
The show is a longer one than some of those available and the sound is much better, to my ears, than what is described in the document detailing the show.
I am just settling in to listen to this show for the first time and so far I am really digging the energy and the setlist.
Early impressions;
Hailstone Hands of God features Robbie trying out playing styles that he would use to great effect on later songs eg. Fully Completely.
Rants are incorporated in cover tunes.

The show is available on the Live Hip Archive under the Master Flac or Master mp3 sections. Then go to the 1988 folder and choose the tth1988-07-15 Toronto sub folder. I'm not sure why the links don't work, I must muffed up.

While trying to educated yourself with live Hip, you undoubtedly stumble up this classic (More essential than 85 Copper Penny IMO)

I've listened to this so many times over the years. Gord has the waters lined up, because he knows its going to be an extra special night. And holy f**k. How fortunate are we to have had somebody record this?

It may take me multiple posts to talk about this, because I'm chipping away at it atm

03 - Reformed Baptist Blues - Snuck in right before Suzie Q. They try to disguise it as a cover to get the crowd moving, but little do they know this song that sounds like it's from 1966 is actually from 1986. Shit was retro before A Flock of Seagulls was retro.

05 - Raining(Reigning?)Rayneing Hearts of Fire Does : any1 else pick up on Fifty Mission Cap during when Raining(Reigning?)[purple]Rayneing Hearts of Fire really gets down?

And who the f**k is Derek Taylor?

06 - All Canadian Surf Club Denim Jackets and Long Hair - 'Mr. Johnny Faye on the drums ladies and gentlemen. At this point we'd like to thank the Horseshoe. At this point they were instrumental in celebrating Johnny's birthday last week....'

I realized as I was working my way through this that I've listened to this boot many times. However, it wasn't until Gord thanking the Horseshoe for being instrumental in celebrating JF's birthday.

Love it so far; the playful intro before they get going, an interesting rendition of Susie Q and looking forward to picking things up again this evening.

Not only did someone record it, but it sounds great for something that was taped almost 30 years ago

07 - I don't think I've listened to TImes Are Passing Us By in years! Some great early use of Paul's fantastic and unique backing vocals

09 - Derek, Are You Here Yet? I'd like to give Derek Taylor a small token of the band's appreciation!
Road Runner - A Bo Diddley classic. Just a super young and probably buzzed as f**k Gord havin fun with his friends.

11 - Hailstone Hands of God. Hip museum seyz this is the only known version of this song. But I think there's a demo of this ?

Finally got back to listening; love Gord's banter before the first song and you can imagine that he's discovering his stage presence.

She Didn't Know - love the fast intro to She Didn't Know; great hook to get things going and a pretty uptempo song to get the crowd into the show.

Highway Girl - a solid song to follow up; tempo backs off a bit but still a pretty straight forward rocker

RBB - I forgot how much I enjoy this song; lots of fun with lots of grit and a great retro vibe

Back at it tonight hopefully (after Long Time Running!)

If I'm not mistaken, many portions of the Hip Museum regarding the Horseshoe show are from the original version of the unreleased Hip page from the early days of online Hip fandom. Some things changed (such as Contact Love becoming Heart Attack Love), but others didn't.

That said, it is the only known live version, I believe.

Have listened through a few time; amazing recording quality for so long ago and fantastic that someone captured this.

The covers are always interesting to hear as they became so rare later in their career; besides some snippets of songs, I think the only cover I saw them play was Queen Bitch.

However, what really gets me is the collection of originals, especially the quality of some of the unreleased stuff. Lots of energy, great playing and obviously they spent a ton of time getting as polished as possible. They're not just content to go out and play music to entertain the crowd; they're there to put on a show and nothing less than their best is what they want to put out.

Obviously, lots of evolution in their craft to come, but even here you can hear what is going to make them great and why their live shows have always been a very important part of the music.

From The Hip Museum
This e-mail from JB was so full of valuable insight, that I'm just going to post it here in its entirety. Thank you JB:
I can add some insight to the Early Years section, having been to probably 50 or 60 shows between 85-88.

If you want to find any cover songs the Hip did in those days all you had to do was get the early records of the Rolling Stones, the Yardbirds, The Animals, The Pretty Things, etc. - basically any of the first wave of British Invasion bands (and the Monkees). BUT, the Hip usually only covered the songs that their idols covered, rather than playing the early originals by the same. So if you check out the first three or four Stones albums you'll find about a dozen songs the Hip did regularly. Talkin' Bout You, Route 66, Suzie Q, Little by Little, Walking the Dog, Down Home Girl, etc.

Similarly, go through the Yardbirds catalog and you'll find quite a few Hip standards from the Early Years [including Train Kept a Rolling, which Gord will always attribute to Johnny Cash, but they took it from the Yardbirds] - I Wish You Would, Certain Girl, Her 'Tis, Boom Boom, Baby Please Don't Go and more.

Not to say they wouldn't do original artist hits - crowd favourites Off the Hook, and For Your Love [written by Graham Gouldman, and the cause of Eric Clapton leaving the Yardbirds] were requested a hundred different times a night. And once in a while you'd get Honky Tonk Women, 2000 Light Years from Home, among others.

In your list I see Big City listed as an original. This is a Pretty Things cover and was written by Alan Klein and Jimmy Duncan in the mid 60s. Also you have Night Calls Out - this song was actually Night Comes Down by The Mickey Finn originally released in 1965. Little by Little was taken from the 1st Stones album.

For the original songs - If She's Seventeen was actually titled It's Snowing (don't ask me why). Also you can add (I'm an) Alternative Guy, and Straight Down to Hell both of which were played in early to mid 86 [along with Baby Blue Blood, Heart Attack Love, It's Snowing, Evelyn, and All Canadian Surf Club to start getting their original material into the sets].

There's one important item that should be added to the list of covers. In 85 and 86 there was one song that had to be played every night, and occasionally the requests were so numerous that they'd play it twice in the same night - the Bedrock song from the Flintstones (Twitch Twitch). Probably Bobby arranged that after watching a whole lot of cartoons. It was a thing to behold. Sometimes Gord would introduce it as "a song by the Stones - the Flintstones that is...".

And for the record, before Paul joined the band they used to play Cold Shot by Stevie Ray Vaughan. This seems hard to imagine now, but it worked.
enjoy
JB

I think its neat that Train Kept-A Rollin' and 2000 Light Years From Home made appearances as cover songs on the World Container tour.

Also, it's kind of neat that some other Hipbasers are doing the chronological progression as well, via 'Thoughts and Insights' and the 'Weakest Link' posts. It's going to take us a little longer to get through this one however
