Hipbase Bootleg Show of the Month: March 2018

Post by sean.bonner »

"Spring starts when a heartbeat's pounding"

Marchin' on (oof) to the selection for this month- Hipbaser kaisersozee selects next in our chronological journey through Hipstory. We are now upon the Phantom Power tour!
kaisersozee wrote:When I was chosen to pick a Phantom Power show I knew it would be hard. What an incredible tour it was full of some of the best recordings ever. I saw 6 shows from that tour (5 of them in a 6 day period – 4 of those in the Phantom Zone) like “Kieffer” last month I decided to go with a show I didn’t see. There are so many iconic shows to choose from like Grape Jam, Bill’s Bar, Zoo Amphitheatre Toledo, Ryan’s Ballroom, Modjeska Wi, or any of the shows I saw in Canada.
I ended up choosing between the Modjeska, the Roxy Halloween show where Gord came out dressed as Fidel Castro and the show I selected 1998-05-18 Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro NC.
The venue has a capacity of 750 people and the intimacy of the show, Gord’s ranting, songs within songs and a 2 encore set with the Rules and Chagrin Falls and killer Meridian decided it.

Enjoy my Hip Brothers & Sisters!!
I've never heard this show, and I've cheated and previewed it to myself these past three days, and it is fantastic.

The link kaiser posted is just one FLAC file of the whole show. I tried to find it in the Hipbase archive, but could not. Then I did something I had not done in years, and used to do all the time. I had the audacity to give this show my Audacity treatment (I haven't edited a show down in forever). I hope kaiser that you don't mind, but I took the FLAC you posted, and edited it down into tracks. I then exported them as mp3's, and gave them proper tagging. If I do this google drive thing correctly, here's some mp3s for this selection: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1qbl9c ... vi1XaLy_-m

After a few soundboards for our selections, we're back to an audience recording. The size of the room shines through on this, in my opinion. One of those rooms where you may not even have to amp the drumkit very much or at all...

Enjoy!

I won't be able to listen to this one for a few days, but it looks incredible. Versions of ABAC with the pink moon tag and Fire with the Burning church - Yes please. I'm really curious about Gift Shop, not sure if I recall many extended versions of it.

Looks like a great pick!

Hearing The Never-Ending Present during New Orleans Is Sinking is fantastic. This is the best version of New Orleans Is Sinking I've never heard so far!

It even includes the mandatory over liquored hip fan yelling 'KILLER WHALE' just before the jam.

...Not passing judgement. That could have just as easily been me if I was at this show.

Had the chance to give this a spin this morning. While I love a good soundboard recording, an audience recording is often just as enjoyable for me, as it provides a glimpse into the energy of the show surrounding the band.

Fireworks - I've never been a huge fan of this song, but it works fairly well as an opener.
Fully - I believe this has mentioned by others in other threads, but this is the perfect second song in a set. This show is no different
Grace - While this song has been intro'd a thousand different ways, one common theme Gord uses lots of I's and me - this one takes a bit more of a going to war theme, including a mention of Vietnam
Something on – It seems to me this is a song the band always enjoyed performing
Gift shop – this version sounded a bit more poppy, maybe sped up? It's the only time I've ever heard 'cookie factory' added on. This add on is something that had been around for awhile and I'm curious to know why it never turned into it's own song.
Bobcaygeon – The fact that the 4th single from the PP album became one of the band's most well known songs speaks to how amazing of an album it was.
Nautical – does a version of this song exist where they don’t nail it?
Poets – similar to Nautical, I'm yet to hear a version of this one that doesn't rock
Greasy – it was cool to hear insomniacs added on to the end of this one. It'd be interesting to look at some of the other shows around the same time as this one to see if this was common or just something that happened that night.
ABAC – Any time Pink moon is teased during ABAC it takes a perfect song and somehow makes it more perfect.
Springtime – love the nazarath tease – same comments as with Greasy, I've heard the tease for this flight tonight in other boots but not sure if it was with Springtime or not
Rules – A pleasant surprise, this would likely be the 'rarity' from this show
Meridian - not much to add to this one, solid performance though
Escape – was anyone able to make out what was said as the song wrapped up?
NOIS – never ending present works incredibly well in this song
Chagrin – backing vocals on this one are wicked
Fire – highlight of the show for me – love this version of the burning church intro, something I hope is included anytime the song was played live.
Planet – did Gord introduce it as Leave the Planet?
Thompson - Slots in well in the encore and as a transition to Little Bones
Bones – Great closer, I'm pretty sure Gord mentions 'it’s a good life if you don’t weaken' as the song is kicking in, maybe the earliest appearance of this lyric/title?

Finally got to listen - great show and a great reminder of the first time I saw them love on this tour. Hopefully will find time to listen again and go song by song.

Fireworks - unlike many others, I enjoy this song and this is a good version. To me there are so many songs that fit better as an opener than Fireworks but a good start nonetheless.

FC - as always, a great song for the second song of the show. They seem to enjoy playing it, rocking tune that always seems to get the crowd going. Also, it always seemed to work well for some ramblings in the interlude before "bring me back in shackles"

Grace - great intro and as always, just a great tune. GI Gord is fantastic and always great to hear Gord rambling whether it was songs in the works or just whatever caught his attention on a given day.

Something On - I only saw this twice (on the PP tour) on back to back nights in Halifax. Great to hear it hear and the live version always seems to be lots of fun.

Giftshop - I have always loved the intro to GS and when the opening notes ring out, it sends chills down my spine. Cookie Factory is a nice addition and seems to make up for the fact that Rob never quite seems to capture the magic of the studio version outro live.

Bobcaygeon - great version of this song and seems like the crowd was really into it

Nautical - like GS, intro gets me everytime and this is one of my favourite Hip tunes. Have never heard a version that I didn't enjoy.

Poets - guitar tone is a little dirtier than usual for Poets giving it a grittier feel. Hard not to hear this song and tap your foot along. Great Bird's Eye View tag

Re: Fireworks as an opener

I kind of prefer this as an opener rather than midway through the set (just like In View). For me, they're kindof momentum killers, but if its the first song, there's nothing to kill. Just a quick little rocker to grease the crowd up, and then launch into slots #2 and/or 3 with heavier hitting songs.

A good point; I do like when the main set finishes with a huge rocker and then the encore starts with something a little lower tempo and then builds from there.

I've always enjoyed Fireworks; certainly not the greatest song in the catalogue but was always enjoyable in concert and lots of fun to play, especially around a campfire.

Excellent selection. I have never heard this show before. I can now safely say that this is a classic!
