Gord Downie presented with Key to City

Read the complete story at Buffalo Rising.

In efforts to find a better day for the city, Mayor Dyster is clearly a mayor who gets it (see some of his comments on the opening of Old Falls Street here). Also the USA Niagara Development Corporation, an arm of Empire State Development, which is now thankfully led by a no-nonsense guy from my neck of the woods who knows what it takes to make things happen on this side of the soda-pop line. It’s great to see Niagara Falls getting less tragic and more hip — and more green.

And about the green: at some point in the concert (perhaps around 7PM), Mayor Dyster will be honoring Gord for his environmental advocacy with a proclamation and a key to the city (mayors do these things). And as Gord is a big supporter of the Waterkeeper Alliance — an international network of organizations which work to keep their local water bodies “swimmable, fishable, drinkable,” and which includes WNY’s own Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper — Julie Barrett O’Neill, executive director and Riverkeeper, will be speaking as well.

Heaven Is A Better Place Today – for Ty Henderson

Poets was the last song on June 30, 2006. A guy, just a kid, a music lover named Ty Henderson, walking back from the show to his camp site , got hit by a drunk driver and killed. He was a music lover, just like you. Heaven Is A Better Place Today was dedicated to Ty on July 15.

These two songs today are for Ty, his friends, family and other Music Lovers like Ty. Please don’t drink and drive.

YouTube: 11th Fret Video… 7 years later

- Oh, and I found this in a shoebox under my bed. It’s the long lost, ‘11th Fret’ video that Mike Clattenburg wrote and directed back in 2003? We shot it in one afternoon and evening at The Rivoli in Toronto.

Here’s Mike remembering it;

“I just remember a massive goodwill as we made that, we made it on the back of Pascals too, for like 4K. The idea of the video phone seems even more relevant, I also remember you recorded live adats as we shot that you were thinking of intercutting live performance audio with the studio track which is still a sassy idea oh and the love story was inspired by that scene in cocksucker blues where keith falls asleep. We shot it the exact same way.”

And just for kicks… here’s the video for Chancellor:

Buck 65 (aka Rich Terfry) and Gord Downie

http://www.spinner.com/2010/06/16/buck-65-20-odd-years/

…the EP ‘20 Odd Years: Volume 1 — Avant.’ On this first installment, singer Jenn Grant tempers Buck 65’s gruff delivery with a sweet melody on the track ‘Who by Fire,’ while Coral Osborne, daughter of 54-40 frontman Neil Osborne, shows up on the banjo laced ‘Red Eyed Son.’

Indeed, the vast majority of tracks on the forthcoming ‘20 Odd Years’ are collaborations. Terfry set out to “work with talented musicians of all stripes,” and he recruited singers such as Gord Downie, Meaghan Smith, John Southworth and Gentleman Reg to add a quality elusive from his previous offerings. The result might be his most accessible offering to date.

Got A Question For Gord Downie?

From @GordDownie: Hi all, I’m doing some filming on Thursday with Gord and the Country of Miracles and I thought that it would be cool to get some questions from folks to ask while I am there. Post your questions here by Thursday morning and I’ll take them with me and get some answers on video for you.

War Child Auction: Guitar Autographed by Gord Downie + Bala Tickets

The War Child Rockin Auction

War Child has joined forces with 102.1 The Edge to bring you a weekly online auction of amazing memorabilia, tickets, and unique experiences, while helping children in war zones. New auction items will be announced each week on 102.1 The Edge as part of Thursday 30 with Dave Bookman. The items will be listed on our eBay page and will be accessible through this site, and at http://www.edge.ca.

The debut War Child auction item featured this week includes 2 tickets to see Gord Downie and The Country of Miracles live in concert at The Kee To Bala on July 15th, 2010, PLUS an Epiphone DR-100 Acoustic Sunburst guitar autographed by Gord Downie himself. Bid quickly as this item will only be up for one week.

Legendary singer, songwriter, and poet, Gord Downie is one of Canada’s most revered artists. The frontman and lyricist of one of Canada’s most influential rock bands, The Tragically Hip, will release his third solo album, The Grand Bounce, on Tuesday, June 8th, 2010. The album was produced by Death Cab For Cutie’s Chris Walla, and features a group of musicians known as The Country of Miracles, including Julie Doiron, Dave Clark, Josh Finlayson, John Press and Dale Morningstar. The Grand Bounce was recorded at The Hip’s Bath House studio in Kingston and includes the hit radio single “The East Wind” and the track “The Hard Canadian,” which Gord performed live in Toronto last February during a performance with Gordon Lightfoot.

All auction items have been generously donated and all money raised will go towards helping children whose lives have been devastated by war. A new item will be offered each week, so keep checking the site for updates.
